STATEMENT: Bondi Shredded Justice Department’s Reputation, Undermined Rule of Law

Washington, D.C. — Today, President Donald Trump ousted Attorney General Pam Bondi. In response, Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

Pam Bondi completely shredded the Justice Department’s reputation for integrity and independence and turned it into a political weapon for Donald Trump to go after his enemies and reward his allies. Instead of upholding the law, the department has been used to undermine the rule law and twist historic civil rights laws to attack Americans instead of protecting them. Any replacement must refuse to let Trump use the Justice Department as his personal political arm to seek revenge against his opponents. And Congress must ramp up oversight to shine a light on the abuses that have taken place under this administration and pass reforms to curb these abuses.
