RELEASE: New Analysis Finds TrumpRx Discounts Only One Drug While 22 Million Americans See Health Care Costs Rise

Washington, D.C. — A new analysis from the Center for American Progress examines the Trump administration’s flagship drug pricing portal and finds that TrumpRx, which the president has called “one of the most transformative health care initiatives of all time,” offers a new lower price on a single medication.

The analysis arrives at a critical moment. The enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits expired at the end of 2025, increasing premiums by roughly $1,016 for roughly 22 million marketplace enrollees and pushing 4 million off coverage by 2034.

“The administration is undermining the most powerful tool for lowering patients’ costs at the pharmacy counter—health insurance coverage—and replacing it with a government-branded coupon book,” said Neda Ashtari, associate director of health policy at CAP and author of the analysis. “For the 22 million Americans whose premiums have doubled, and the millions more who stand to lose coverage, a $56 discount on a fertility drug is not “immediate relief.”

Key findings of CAP’s analysis include:

  • TrumpRx lowers the price of exactly one drug. After accounting for generics, competing discount platforms, and manufacturer assistance programs, only one medication—Cetrotide, a fertility drug—offers a genuinely new lower price. Seventeen drugs have cheaper generics available, 20 drugs that do not have lower-cost generics are either comparable or cheaper on GoodRx, and 16 were already available at the same or lower price through manufacturer coupons or patient assistance programs.
  • The portal covers only a tiny slice of the prescription market. TrumpRx lists just 54 of the roughly 24,000 approved medications approved by the Food and Drug Administration, and none are generics—even though generics account for nine in 10 U.S. prescriptions. Among the selected drugs: two growth hormone treatments, three injectable IVF medications, and one drug no longer used in clinical practice.
  • Several headline discounts rely on bait-and-switch pricing. Eye-catching introductory prices apply only to early fills or the lowest doses, before patients reach clinically effective treatment levels. Wegovy, for example, is advertised at $199 per month but jumps to $349 after two fills. Zepbound removes the discount entirely if a refill is missed by more than 45 days, pushing the price to $699 per fill.
  • Millions of uninsured Americans cannot even access the portal. Every drug on TrumpRx requires a prescription, yet nearly half of uninsured adults report not seeing a doctor in a given year. As a result, roughly 13 million uninsured people in 2026 may never reach the portal’s front door. While TrumpRx does little for the uninsured, it can actually raise costs for insured patients.
  • TrumpRx can raise costs for insured patients. Cash purchases through the portal do not count toward insurance deductibles or out-of-pocket maximums. A patient paying $199 per month through TrumpRx instead of through their plan forfeits $2,388 in deductible progress each year, potentially leaving them worse off financially.
