Data on Poverty in the United States

The Center for American Progress’ new poverty data project contains U.S. Census Bureau data on the national, state, and congressional district levels, all in one place. Below, users can explore data on poverty and more than a dozen other topics that measure the health of the economy, as well as identify potential solutions to the problems these data reveal.

+ About the data

Poverty data on the national level are displayed using the official poverty measure (OPM) and the supplemental poverty measure (SPM). While the OPM has been in use for longer, the SPM takes a more comprehensive approach to its methodology to give a clearer picture of someone’s available resources by adding and subtracting various benefits and expenses to their income. SPM poverty thresholds are also adjusted for geographic differences in costs of living. To learn more about the differences between the OPM and SPM, check out the Census Bureau’s annual reports on poverty data.

Poverty data on the state and congressional district level are displayed only using the OPM because the American Community Survey is missing some data elements needed to produce annual SPM estimates.
