On March 22, 2023, the Center for American Progress submitted comments to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regarding the EPA’s proposed rule on the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for particulate matter. The EPA is required to review and revise the air quality criteria for primary and secondary NAAQS for particulate matter every five years. CAP’s letter emphasizes the need for the EPA to strengthen soot standards to a maximum of 8 micrograms per cubic meter annually and 25 micrograms per cubic meter daily to protect public health and environmental justice communities.
