Washington, D.C. — Today, as reports indicate that Nancy Sutley will step down as the chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, Carol M. Browner, Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress and former director of the White House Office of Energy and Climate Change Policy, released the following statement:
Nancy Sutley has been a tireless advocate for public health, environment, and energy matters for the American people. While we may be losing a strong public health and environmental champion in the White House, Nancy does leave a record of success in taking great strides to protect our air, land, and water from the dangers of pollution. She has championed the investments in clean energy technology needed to truly achieve energy independence and reduce our dependence on high carbon sources of energy. She helped secure landmark fuel-efficiency standards and clean air protections that will protect public health, and she was instrumental in developing the president’s 2013 Climate Action Plan to reduce carbon pollution and prepare the nation for the impacts of climate change. She has done great work to protect the environment throughout her career in public service, and I know she will continue to be a champion for these causes in her next endeavor.
