STATEMENT: EACH Woman Act Will Ensure that Coverage for Abortion Is Available for All Women, Says CAP’s Donna Barry

Washington, D.C. — Donna Barry, the Director of the Women’s Health and Rights Program at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement after today’s introduction of the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance, or EACH Woman Act:

At a time when Congress seems only interested in restricting women’s access to abortion and other women’s health care, the EACH Woman Act is a critical piece of legislation that would lift and prohibit future funding bans on abortion. The current bans, including the Hyde Amendment, affect women struggling to make ends meet and those who serve our country. The decision to have an abortion should be made by a woman herself with counsel from those she trusts. It should not be restricted by the type of insurance she has.

The EACH Woman Act will ensure that coverage for abortion is available for all women, no matter their ZIP code, income, or type of insurance. We applaud and thank the congressional champions of this bill, led by Reps. Barbara Lee (D-CA), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), and Diana DeGette (D-CO).
