Washington, D.C. — Thousands of public officials have lost their jobs over public corruption charges similar to what Trump has already admitted, according to a new analysis from the Center for American Progress.
From 1999 to 2018, the U.S. Department of Justice convicted more than 14,000 public officials at the federal, state, and local level in public corruption cases. Most of these cases resulted in resignation, removal from office, and/or a prison sentence.
The list includes a New Jersey official who tried to punish a local mayor for disloyalty, a Kentucky agriculture commissioner who used official funds for personal gain, and a Pennsylvania state treasurer who threatened two citizens if they refused to help his gubernatorial campaign.
The case against President Donald Trump is clear: He used the power of his office to withhold military aid from Ukraine in order to interfere in the 2020 election. As many experts have argued, this was bribery, fraud, and a betrayal of his oath of office. Trump should be held accountable, just like any other elected official who breaks the law, the analysis says.
