Washington, D.C. — Thursday, October 8, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., please join the authors of a groundbreaking new book, The Everywhere Millionaires, at the Center for American Progress for a discussion of their findings and their implications for the work to constrain growing wealth inequality. The authors will be joined by a panel of former executive branch and legislative branch policy practitioners and advocates.
If you want to understand who owns America’s wealth, the new book argues, you should look at the tens of thousands of auto dealerships, beverage distributors, and contracting firms spread across the country. These run-of-the-mill businesses are how “the hidden 1%,” or Everywhere Millionaires, dominate top American fortunes. And together they have more wealth than America’s CEOs or billionaires. The authors argue that understanding the “staggering fortunes” gained from running “unglamorous businesses” in every corner of America is also key for the future of taxation in America.
