Washington, D.C. — Today, the Trump administration finalized a rule to roll back Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for new cars and light trucks. These standards were first enacted in response to the 1973 oil crisis and have been responsible for historic improvements in vehicle fuel economy. Last year’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act eliminated the standards’ noncompliance fines, and this rule weakens the standards even further. In response, Trevor Higgins, senior vice president for Energy and Environment at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
This move is just another favor to the fossil fuel industry that will increase costs for drivers and make pollution worse. With gas prices soaring, the Trump administration is gutting fuel economy standards that help consumers save money. The Trump administration continues to move us backward while Americans pay the price.
