Washington, D.C. – Today, the Supreme Court issued an emergency order that lifts one of the roadblocks preventing the Trump administration from moving ahead with plans to restrict the use of mail ballots while lower courts continue to decide whether the president’s executive order is legal. In response, Ben Hovland, senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
The Supreme Court failed election officials and voters today by adding to the confusion about the fast-approaching midterm elections. With mail ballots required to be sent out to military voters in just 26 days, there needs to be certainty on how this election will be conducted. While this order is only procedural, the court is playing into Trump’s hands by creating uncertainty around mail-in ballots and playing politics with election administration issues.
