Washington, D.C. — Today, the Senate narrowly confirmed the nomination of Todd Blanche to serve as attorney general. In response, Devon Ombres, senior director for courts and legal policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
Todd Blanche’s confirmation as attorney general will only further undermine the legitimacy of the Justice Department under President Trump. Blanche’s actions have made it clear that his loyalty lies with President Trump, not with the Constitution and American democracy. He has shown an abject willingness to politicize the Justice Department in pursuit of President Trump’s grievances, and there’s no reason to expect that will change. Congress must exercise its oversight powers in the coming months to rein in and prevent the worst abuses that are expected.
