Washington, D.C. — Today, President Donald Trump nominated Todd Blanche to serve as attorney general. In response, Devon Ombres, senior director for courts and legal policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following comments:
Under Todd Blanche’s watch, the Justice Department has become a symbol of politicized prosecutions and unprecedented abuses of power that have undermined public trust in the rule of law. He’s used his power to target the president’s political enemies and made decisions that have put Trump’s personal interests ahead of the Americans he serves. His approval of a staggering $1.8 billion slush fund that could have compensated Trump’s allies was so ethically questionable that even the administration’s most ardent supporters in Congress cried foul. The Senate should reject this nomination to prevent President Trump from further eroding the integrity and independence of our justice system.
