RELEASE: CAP Welcomes Jonathan Fritz as Senior Fellow

Washington, D.C. — The Center for American Progress is welcoming Jonathan Fritz as a senior fellow for China policy in its National Security and International Policy department. He will lead CAP’s crosscutting work related to U.S. policy on China, developing effective, forward-looking approaches to addressing the multidimensional China challenge.

“From economic competition to conflict deterrence to cooperation on transnational issues, the United States needs a new and comprehensive approach to China,” said Damian Murphy, senior vice president for National Security and International Policy at CAP. “With decades of experience, Jonathan brings unparalleled expertise to this portfolio. He is exactly the kind of leader that can advance a framework for China policy that meets this urgent moment.”

Fritz’s distinguished career includes service as a U.S. diplomat for more than three decades. He most recently served as the principal deputy assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs; the chief of staff to the undersecretary of state for economic growth, energy, and the environment; and the deputy assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific Affairs covering China, Mongolia, and Taiwan. “The challenges that China poses will be at the forefront of U.S. foreign policy for years to come, and I’m excited to work with the great team at CAP to address those challenges in ways that tangibly help improve the lives of everyday Americans,” said Fritz.

Fritz was one of the State Department’s most experienced China hands, with strong expertise in economic statecraft and alliance management. He spent two years in the U.S. Air Force Academy and graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor’s and a master’s in East Asian studies.
