STATEMENT: Easing of Russian Oil Sanctions Only Helps Putin, Undermines Ukraine

Washington, D.C. — After the Trump administration moved to ease sanctions on Russian oil, Damian Murphy, senior vice president for National Security and International Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

The ill-conceived war in Iran is turning into a windfall for Vladimir Putin. Easing these sanctions will only help boost Putin’s war machine, which provides intelligence and hardware to Iran that it has used in attacks on American service members. This move betrays our support for Ukraine, undermines years of global pressure on Russia, and further strains our relationships with European allies. The best way to keep our troops safe and help American consumers is to end this reckless war, which has already cost the country more than $11 billion.
