STATEMENT: Latest Shooting is Sign of Trump Enforcement Tactics Out of Control

Washington, D.C. — After reports that U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents shot two people in Portland on Thursday, Dan Herman, senior director for democratic accountability at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

The Trump administration’s immigration crackdown is spiraling out of control. Americans do not support the dangerous, unaccountable tactics being cheered on by the White House. The reality is Americans deserve and want better—a system where our immigration laws are enforced fairly and people are treated with dignity. But the Trump administration has proven, once again, that it is not up to that job. Its reckless immigration crackdown in Portland must be halted and a thorough investigation of this incident must occur.
