STATEMENT: Trump’s Expansion of Domestic Military Deployments Threatens Our Democracy

Washington, D.C. — After President Donald Trump announced that he had federalized Oregon National Guard troops over the objections of the governor to support immigration enforcement, Damian Murphy, senior vice president for National Security and International Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

Trump’s continued expansion of domestic military deployments to cities all over the country threatens the American people and our democracy. It’s clear from his dangerous rhetoric that these deployments are about causing chaos and suppressing peaceful protests, not about public safety or national security. The Trump administration’s efforts to use the military against their fellow American citizens flies in the face of our nation’s most sacred principles. We cannot become numb to this type of behavior.
