Building an Economy for All
Washington, D.C. — Today, Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement on this week’s government funding debate:
What has happened in Congress this week is just a preview of the extraordinary dysfunction and corruption that is coming next year. Pediatric cancer patients. 9/11 survivors. Seniors struggling to pay for their prescriptions. This week underlined that any American is expendable if Donald Trump and his billionaire buddies so demand it. The willingness of Republican leaders in Congress to place the whims of a few wealthy insiders above the safety and paychecks of everyday Americans is dangerous. While the government remains open, so too should the eyes of all Americans be as congressional Republican leadership spends the upcoming months laying the groundwork to give massive tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans while cutting their hard-earned benefits. To prevent our government from sliding further toward oligarchy, the voices of working people in this country are needed now more than ever.
