Demand a Binding and Enforceable Ethics Code for the Supreme Court Justices
The U.S. Supreme Court is facing a reckoning of its own making.
It’s confirmed: Activist billionaires have been meddling with Supreme Court cases—and ultimately, U.S. democracy—by pampering Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito with free luxury vacations.
After months of reporting on this corruption, the court finally issued a code of conduct. Unfortunately, this policy does not address the ethical issues that have been following the justices.
We need to restore trust in the Supreme Court and make sure that a binding, enforceable ethics code applies to its justices. This code must, at a minimum:
- Govern the receipt of gifts
- Clarify disclosure requirements
- Explain when conflicts of interest necessitate recusals
- Lay out how enforcement would work for a Supreme Court justice
These demands would work toward holding corrupt justices accountable and reinstituting trust in the Supreme Court.
Tell Congress now to pass a binding and enforceable code of conduct so that the Supreme Court justices are held accountable to the American people.
