STATEMENT: Global Methane Pledge Is Excellent News for the Climate

Washington, D.C. — In response to leaders from the United States and the European Union jointly announcing a commitment by countries around the world to collectively reduce methane emissions to 30 percent below 2020 levels by 2030 in order to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius, Frances Colón, senior director for International Climate Policy at the Center for American Progress, released the following statement:

Today’s announcement is excellent news for the climate and communities globally, and we applaud this significant step in addressing the climate threat from industrial methane emissions. There is no quicker way to limit the catastrophic effects of climate change than by limiting the amount of methane we release into the atmosphere while we continue the critical work of decarbonizing our economies. This is truly a global announcement, bringing nations together to tackle the growing threat from this potent form of climate pollution.  Today’s announcement is a critical start, and we look forward to more nations joining this agreement in advance of this year’s COP26 in Glasgow.
