STATEMENT: Tongass Protection a Key Step Toward Biden Climate, Conservation Goals

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Biden administration is expected to formally issue protections for the Tongass National Forest, reversing former President Donald Trump’s decision to allow industrial-scale logging of old-growth trees and road building in nearly 9 million acres of forest. In response, Center for American Progress Senior Vice President for Energy and Environment Policy Christy Goldfuss issued the following statement:

As the world’s largest temperate rainforest and America’s largest natural carbon sink, restoring protections for the Tongass National Forest is right in line with the Biden administration’s pledge to take our climate and conservation crises seriously. This is a commitment to the future of the region’s billion-dollar fishing and tourism industries, takes a key step forward in the administration’s 2030 national conservation goal, and creates room to meaningfully engage tribes in the region. I commend the Biden administration for protecting the area’s ecological values and ensuring a safe climate future for all.
