STATEMENT: CAP’s Maggie Jo Buchanan Urges Swift Confirmation of Myrna Pérez to Second Circuit

Washington, D.C. — Today, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the nomination of Myrna Pérez to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. In response, Maggie Jo Buchanan, director of Courts and Legal Reform at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

Myrna Pérez is an eminently qualified lawyer who would bring critical expertise to the federal appeals court. She has spent the bulk of her career working to ensure the strength of our democracy and protecting the right to vote, bringing much-needed professional diversity to a federal bench still dominated by former corporate lawyers and prosecutors despite recent gains. She would also be the only Latina serving on the Second Circuit, a step forward in achieving a judiciary that more fully reflects the people it serves.

Today, Pérez ably demonstrated that she would be a fair-minded and skilled appellate judge who would work to protect the rights of all Americans. It is essential that talented civil rights attorneys like Pérez are welcomed onto the judiciary. The Judiciary Committee should promptly advance her nomination.
