STATEMENT: Chairman Wyden’s Principles Are a Strong Foundation for Drug Pricing Reform

Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden (D-OR) released a series of principles that will inform the committee’s drug pricing reform work. Maura Calsyn, acting vice president of Health Policy at the Center for American Progress, released the following statement on the announcement:

There is no more universally popular proposal in America than real reform for prescription drug prices. The principles released by Chairman Wyden provide a strong foundation to guide Congress’ efforts to pass meaningful and balanced reforms that will lower costs for patients, enhance pharmaceutical innovation, and protect taxpayers. Critically, H.R. 3, the prescription drug proposal that passed the House last Congress, encompasses Chairman Wyden’s principles.

For decades, the American people have seen the prices of prescription drugs soar at rates far exceeding inflation; and with roughly 3 in 10 Americans saying that they aren’t taking their medications as prescribed, the need for reform is urgent and must be signed into law this year. These principles bring us one step closer to that goal.
