STATEMENT: CAP’s John Podesta on the Passing of Vice President Walter Mondale

Washington, D.C. — John Podesta, founder of the Center for American Progress, released the following statement today on the passing of former Vice President Walter “Fritz” Mondale:

Walter Mondale rose from humble beginnings to extraordinary heights. As a member of the U.S. Army, as well as attorney general for Minnesota, a senator, the country’s vice president, and finally as an ambassador, Walter dedicated his life to public service. He was a proud and principled progressive. He invented the role of the modern vice president. Even at times when liberal advocacy fell out of favor, he championed civil rights laws and advocated for programs to lift up the least fortunate among us. His life’s work left an imprint on millions of Americans, and indeed, the broader progressive movement. All of us at the Center for American Progress send our condolences to Walter’s family, friends, and all who knew him and loved him.
