STATEMENT: CAP Applauds House Passage of Critical Immigration Bills and Urges Senate To Follow

Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed both the American Dream and Promise Act of 2021 (H.R. 6) and the Farm Workforce Modernization Act (H.R. 1603), key bills that will provide a pathway to citizenship for millions of Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders, and undocumented farm workers. After the vote, Mara Rudman, executive vice president for Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

The House took the first step forward to enact long-awaited relief for millions of Dreamers, TPS holders, farm workers, and their families. These are hardworking aspiring Americans who contribute to our nation’s shared prosperity. Many alongside their fellow Americans are helping fight the coronavirus pandemic and keeping the country moving as essential front-line workers. For example, among beneficiaries of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, more than 200,000 are working as health care professionals serving all Americans at this critical moment.

In passing these two bills, the House has recognized what the vast majority of Americans know to be true—that undocumented immigrants, such as Dreamers, TPS holders, and farm workers, are an indispensable part of our communities and an integral part of the fabric of our society. We urge the U.S. Senate to take up and pass the American Dream and Promise Act and Farm Workforce Modernization Act immediately and take this significant opportunity to build a more fair, humane, and workable immigration system. As President Joe Biden is committed to signing these critical bills into law, we urge the Senate to meet the moment and deliver for millions of immigrant families and our communities.
