STATEMENT: President-Elect Biden’s CEA Appointees Have the Expertise and Commitment To Rebuild a Stronger and More Equitable Economy

Washington, D.C. — Today President-elect Joe Biden named Cecilia Rouse as chair of the Council of Economic Advisors (CEA) and Heather Boushey and Jared Bernstein as members of the CEA. Following the announcement, Andres Vinelli, vice president for Economic Policy at the Center for American Progress, gave the following statement:

“In naming Cecilia Rouse, Heather Boushey, and Jared Bernstein to the Council of Economic Advisors, President-elect Biden is building a CEA that is prepared to confront the biggest economic crisis in nearly a century. These nominees’ deep, collective knowledge of labor, macroeconomics, trade, and education is only matched by their commitment to ensuring that these disciplines are used to strive for inclusive economic growth and to address structural economic inequality. My CAP colleagues and I were especially proud of Boushey’s appointment. For many years, she was a superb economist and colleague at CAP. We were happy to stand by her when she founded the Washington Center for Economic Growth, where she has led impactful work on economic inequality. We would also be remiss if we didn’t mention the historic nature of Rouse’s appointment: If confirmed, she will make history as the first Black person to chair the CEA. At a time that calls for bold, meaningful, and equitable economic policies, Rouse, Boushey, and Bernstein have the expertise and commitment to rebuild a stronger and more equitable economy.
