STATEMENT: CAP’s John Podesta and Christy Goldfuss Praise Announcement of John Kerry as Special Presidential Envoy for Climate

Washington, D.C. — Today, President-elect Joe Biden announced his intent to name John Kerry as special presidential envoy for climate. In response, John Podesta, founder of the Center for American Progress, and Christy Goldfuss, senior vice president for Energy and Environment Policy at the CAP, issued the following statement:

Today’s announcement to designate longtime climate champion and foreign policy expert John Kerry as climate envoy sends a powerful signal to the rest of the world that the United States is ready to step back into a role of climate leadership. It is a clear sign that climate issues will be at the center of foreign policy, as well as of economic and domestic policy. We don’t have any time to waste. John Kerry will hit the ground running as he returns to the international stage to deliver climate action once again.
