STATEMENT: CAP’s Sam Berger Condemns Trump’s Blatant Effort To Sabotage the Post Office and Deny Americans Their Right To Vote

Washington, D.C. — Today, President Donald Trump told Fox Business that he doesn’t want to fund the U.S. Postal Service in order to make it harder for Americans to cast their ballots safely by mail. In response, Sam Berger, vice president of Democracy and Government Reform at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

The post office is essential to millions of Americans, including seniors and veterans who depend on it for medications. Yet Trump wants to hobble it to make safe voting much more difficult and disenfranchise millions of Americans. Rather than working to address the raging pandemic, Trump’s primary focus is making it harder for Americans to vote and denying federal funding for elections. Everyone must condemn these attacks on our democracy. Trump cannot be allowed to force Americans to choose between their health and safety and their right to vote.
