STATEMENT: The Passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act Is a Critical Step Toward Meaningful Police Reform, CAP’s Ed Chung Says

Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020—H.R.7120—a comprehensive police reform bill centered on law enforcement accountability. Ed Chung, vice president for Criminal Justice Reform at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement after the vote:

Today the U.S. House of Representatives delivered a serious down payment to address decades of unchecked police violence. The murder of George Floyd and the ensuing nationwide protests have spurred a call to action, leading to the House passage of a policing reform bill that holds law enforcement officers and agencies accountable when they violate training, policies, or the law.

All eyes are now on the U.S. Senate to heed the will of the people and move this bill forward. The movement for police reform and racial justice has only just begun, and today’s House vote is a critical step toward justice for all.
