Washington, D.C. — Today, the Center for American Progress joined more than 40 environmental groups in a letter urging congressional leadership to consider legislation that would help coastal communities recover from the economic devastation created by the coronavirus pandemic. The letter calls for investments in coastal restoration to immediately create jobs, protect the coasts from climate-change-driven extreme weather, and restore local fisheries and ecosystems.
Miriam Goldstein, managing director for Energy and Environment Policy and director for Ocean Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
By creating jobs, protecting the coasts against extreme weather, and helping to restore and grow local fisheries, these shovel-ready coastal restoration projects show the many benefits of the blue economy. Congress should immediately invest in the restoration of ocean and coastal habitats to help coastal communities survive both immediate economic hardships and the long-term climate crisis.
