Washington, D.C. — Today, President Donald Trump nominated Kentucky U.S. District Judge Justin Walker to fill a vacancy on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. This is the president’s second judicial nominee this week—the first being Cory Wilson, who has a long record of opposing health care for Americans. In response, Maggie Jo Buchanan, director of Legal Progress at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
During a pandemic that is ravaging our country, President Trump wants to elevate an unqualified, ideological extremist who would strike down the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and take away health care from millions of Americans. Justin Walker has called the U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding the ACA “catastrophic” and has praised Justice Brett Kavanaugh as a conservative “warrior” while celebrating him for writing the “roadmap” to overturn the health care law. With more than a million cases of the coronavirus and hundreds of thousands of deaths expected, any senator who votes to support Walker’s elevation will be showing just how little regard they have for the crisis American families are facing.
