STATEMENT: On 1-Year Anniversary of House Approving Landmark Democracy Reform Legislation, CAP’s Neera Tanden Calls for Passage in Senate

Washington, D.C. — Center for American Progress President and CEO Neera Tanden issued the following statement ahead of the one-year anniversary of passage in the House of Representatives of landmark democracy reform legislation known as the For the People Act, or H.R. 1:

At a time when American democracy is under attack, the movement for bold democracy reform is on the march. One year ago, the House passed the historic For the People Act, a sweeping package of anti-corruption and pro-voter reforms. Since that time, momentum has surged at the local, state, federal, and presidential levels. If we want to make progress on lowering prescription drug prices, reducing the epidemic of gun violence, and protecting clean air and water, we need to limit the influence of powerful special interests and return power to the people. It’s time for Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to listen to this people-powered movement and allow a vote on the For the People Act.
