STATEMENT: Bipartisan Vote on Iran War Powers Is Welcome, CAP’s Kelly Magsamen Says

Washington, D.C. – Today, the U.S. Senate voted 55-45 to pass a resolution limiting the president’s power to attack Iran without congressional approval. In response, Kelly Magsamen, vice president for National Security and International Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

Today’s bipartisan Senate vote will constrain President Donald Trump’s ability to drag the United States into a reckless war with Iran without congressional approval. The vote also marks an important step toward greater congressional responsibility over matters of war, in line with Congress’ constitutional authority. Exercising this responsibility is especially important when the American people cannot count on responsible national security leadership from the White House.
