STATEMENT: Brasher’s Extreme Record Makes Him Unfit for Federal Appeals Court, CAP’s Maggie Jo Buchanan Says

Washington, D.C. — As the U.S. Senate considers the confirmation of Andrew Brasher to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Maggie Jo Buchanan, director of Legal Progress at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

Andrew Brasher’s nomination to the 11th Circuit is an embodiment of President Donald Trump’s disregard for democracy. In addition to working to restrict access to women’s health care and LGBTQ rights, Brasher has an extreme, far-right record on voting rights—repeatedly arguing in support of unconstitutional racial gerrymandering schemes as well as a variety of other laws designed to suppress the votes of people of color. Brasher also was a member of Trump’s transition team in 2016, a clear sign that the president’s goal in placing him on the federal appeals court is to harm the rights of families across the country in order to advance his own political interests.
