STATEMENT: President Trump’s Attacks on Environmental Review Aim to Silence the Voices of Americans and Deny the Reality of Our Changing Climate

Washington D.C. — Today, President Donald Trump and White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) Chair Mary Neumayr proposed to gut the implementing regulations for the National Environmental Policy Act, a critical law that protects our air, water, communities, and climate. In response, CAP Senior Vice President for Energy and Environment and former CEQ Managing Director Christy Goldfuss issued the following statement:

Today’s move isn’t about “streamlining” or “modernizing,” as the Trump administration claims. It’s about clearing the way for more polluting pipelines and dirty fossil fuel projects—plain and simple. If finalized, the proposed regulations would give the Trump administration the opportunity to race through project approvals without considering the long-term impacts.

In the face of a changing climate, these reckless proposed regulations amount to blindfolding decision-makers as they try to drive a bulldozer through a town. Fossil fuel corporations have demanded these changes, which will allow them to complete their own environmental review despite blatant conflicts of interest. The consequences of these changes will be real and felt most by those who have the least ability to fight back.
