Today, the House of Representatives took an essential step in protecting our democracy by restoring protections so that voters can access the voting booth free of suppression tactics. The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Shelby County v. Holder gutted core parts of the Voting Rights Act, which had provided an extra level of protection against voter roll purges, polling location changes, and other measures that negatively affected communities of color. The ball is now in the Senate’s court to cast a vote in support of protecting our democracy and ensuring eligible voters can access the voting booth.
