Washington, D.C. — As the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary prepares to vote on the confirmation of Lawrence VanDyke to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Maggie Jo Buchanan, director of Legal Progress at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
Lawrence VanDyke is all too representative of President Donald Trump’s nominees to the federal bench. He has been found unqualified to serve by the American Bar Association and is a politically oriented, far-right conservative activist. Trump’s efforts to remake the federal judiciary in his image, aided and abetted by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), continues to threaten the rights of people across the country. With each lifetime appointment, Trump is corrupting the bench in ways that will resonate long after his presidency ends. The Senate should reject his nomination.
