Washington, D.C. — Today, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) refused to allow the Senate to vote on a once-in-a-generation package that would curb corruption in government and expand voting rights for Americans. The House of Representatives already passed this legislation—known as H.R. 1—earlier this year. In response, Sam Berger, vice president of Democracy and Government Reform at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
Sen. McConnell is standing in the way of key structural reforms that would curb the culture of corruption and empower voters. This measure would return power to people, reduce the toxic effects of dark money and special interest money in the U.S. political system, and expand access to the ballot box. These reforms are more important than ever given how the current system is rigged in favor of corporations and wealthy special interests. McConnell must heed the voices of the American people and allow this legislation to pass, for the good of the country.
