STATEMENT: House Prescription Drugs Plan Is a Bold Start and Should Be Broadened to Bring Families Desperately Needed Relief

Washington, D.C. — Today, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi unveiled H.R. 3, the Lower Drugs Costs Now Act, a bill that would allow the federal government to negotiate prescription drug prices for hundreds of the nation’s most expensive prescription drugs and extend those negotiated prices to all Americans, regardless of their source of coverage. Topher Spiro, vice president for Health Policy and senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, released the following statement on the proposal:

The high cost of prescription drugs is a national crisis and calls for big solutions. This proposal is a bold start because it applies to all Americans whether they have public coverage or private insurance. We applaud Speaker Pelosi for putting forward a plan that can be strengthened further in the committee process. In particular, the scope of this framework should be broadened to include the vast majority of prescription drug spending, and Congress should pass it swiftly to bring working families desperately needed relief.
