STATEMENT: CAP’s Sam Berger Praises Supreme Court Ruling that Prevents Trump Administration from Rigging the Census

Washington, D.C. — After a U.S. Supreme Court ruling today that prevents, at least for now, the Trump administration from adding a question about citizenship to the 2020 census, Sam Berger, vice president of Democracy and Government Reform at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

This ruling at least temporarily prevents a nakedly partisan attempt to rig our democracy to favor one party over another. The evidence could not have been clearer: This change to the census was a pretext made to benefit the Republican Party and target immigrant communities specifically. The citizenship question would discourage millions of people from participating in the census and compromised federal funding for critical programs across the country. It is time for the Trump administration to drop this brazen attempt and allow the nation to move forward with a truly nonpartisan census.
