Washington, D.C. — Yesterday, Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Tom Carper (D-DE) introduced the International Climate Accountability Act, a companion bill to a similar measure passed in the House last month that would prevent President Donald Trump from removing the United States from the Paris climate agreement. In response, Christy Goldfuss, senior vice president for Energy and Environment Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
This bill is a critical step toward making climate action a priority in Congress and returning the United States to a position of global climate leadership. Our rapidly changing climate is an urgent crisis that is already having severe impacts on the health and livelihoods of millions of Americans across the country. Instead of working with the many committed cities, states, universities, companies, and countries striving toward a 100 percent clean energy economy, President Trump and his climate denier allies in Congress have chosen to isolate the United States as the only country not part of the agreement.
We are excited to see the momentum sparked by the bipartisan House climate bill carry through to the Senate. This critical legislation deserves a speedy vote in the Senate instead of more obstruction from conservatives and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
