STATEMENT: CAP’s Tom Jawetz on President Trump’s So-Called Immigration Plan

Washington, D.C. — Today, President Donald Trump announced what was billed as a plan to overhaul the U.S. immigration system. Tom Jawetz, vice president for Immigration Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement in response:

Last year, President Trump’s immigration plan failed to get even 40 votes in the Senate. After an embarrassing rollout before Senate Republicans, it’s clear this plan will also go nowhere. Rather than wasting time trying to please Stephen Miller, the president’s senior adviser for policy, Trump should focus on actual solutions to the nation’s pressing immigration issues, including protecting the Dreamers and Temporary Protected Status holders that his own administration placed in jeopardy and dealing with the refugee crisis along our southern border in a humane and effective manner.
