STATEMENT: Lee, Vitter Would Roll Back Protections for Civil, Women’s Rights, CAP’s Sam Berger Says

Washington, D.C. — As the Senate prepares to vote on the nominations of Kenneth Lee to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit and Wendy Vitter to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, Sam Berger, vice president of Democracy and Government Reform at the Center for American Progress, has issued the following statement:

The Senate continues its rush to pack the federal courts with narrow-minded elitists who want to roll back protections for civil rights, women’s rights, and voting rights. Wendy Vitter has been a prominent anti-abortion activist and has promoted junk science and misinformation on women’s health care. Her far-right ideology makes her incapable of being a fair-minded and impartial judge on women’s health and rights. Kenneth Lee’s nomination comes despite the opposition of both of his home-state senators and his failure to disclose inflammatory writings about race. It’s time to consider structural reforms to the judiciary so that it works for all Americans, not just the wealthy few.
