Washington, D.C. — In response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to not grant a writ of certiorari at this time on the Trump administration’s termination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, Tom Jawetz, vice president of Immigration Policy at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
CAP applauds the Supreme Court’s decision to not grant the Trump administration’s extraordinary request to circumvent appellate court review at this time. In addition to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, multiple district courts have ruled that the Trump administration acted unlawfully when it attempted to end DACA in 2017 and that the usual appeals process should go forward before the Supreme Court intervenes to finish off the administration’s politically motivated attack on the program. DACA remains a vital program that has enriched the lives of countless recipients, as well as the American economy and society as a whole. But we know that the Trump administration will stop at nothing to end the program. This brief reprieve provides hundreds of thousands of DACA recipients with critical additional months to visit www.RenewMyDACA.com and apply to renew their protections. Equally important, the 116th Congress must pass legislation to end the uncertainty facing DACA recipients and put all Dreamers and Temporary Protected Status holders on a pathway to citizenship.
