STATEMENT: CAP Applauds Congressional Democrats for Reintroducing Bill to Establish Puerto Rico Hurricanes Commission

Enrique Fernández-Toledo, director of the Puerto Rico Relief and Economic Policy Initiative for the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

We congratulate Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (NY), Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-NY), and Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Ed Markey (D-MA), Kamala Harris (D-CA), and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) for reintroducing legislation to establish a 9/11-style independent commission to investigate the failed federal response to hurricanes Irma and Maria in Puerto Rico. It is important that the commission analyze all factors of the failed federal disaster response, as there are many lessons that must be learned to prevent their reoccurrence and to help Puerto Ricans better rebuild.
