STATEMENT: Sen. Mike Lee Must End Baseless Attack on EEOC’s Chai Feldblum

Washington, D.C. — This week, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) placed a hold on the reappointment of Chai Feldblum as a commissioner of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). In response, Winnie Stachelberg, executive vice president for External Affairs at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

As a distinguished scholar and public servant, Chai Feldblum has championed fairness and justice for workers across our country, especially for people with disabilities and LGBTQ people. In attacking her lifetime of service to advance a narrow political agenda, Sen. Lee fails to recognize that religious liberty and LGBTQ equality exist in harmony. That includes LGBTQ people who are themselves people of faith and congregations of all ideologies who are compelled to embrace their LGBTQ members because of their own faith values. One senator’s objections to LGBTQ equality should not prevent the EEOC from fulfilling its mission of fighting employment discrimination in every workplace. The Senate should reappoint Commissioner Feldblum to the EEOC without delay.
