Washington, D.C. — A new proposed rule released by the Trump administration today would weaken the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) key consumer protections that prevent states from allowing discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions. The proposal would allow states to sell ACA noncompliant policies that can impose annual and lifetime limits on benefits, exclude coverage of basic services, and increase costs for people with pre-existing conditions. Maura Calsyn, managing director of Health Policy at the Center for American Progress, released the following statement in response to the proposal:
This latest effort would authorize states to allow insurers to discriminate against people with pre-existing conditions and increase costs for the American people. Just last year, issuers said a similar proposal was “unworkable” and “would undermine protections for those with pre-existing medical conditions.” More than 7 in 10 Americans want to maintain the ACA’s protections for people with pre-existing conditions and disabilities, but whether in court, through regulations, or through the legislation it champions, this administration and its enablers in Congress have made very clear that they are not listening. The American people must demand better from their elected officials.
