STATEMENT: CAP’s Neera Tanden on the Passing of Sen. John McCain

Washington, D.C. — Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement on the passing of Sen. John McCain (R-AZ):

John McCain was a true American hero and a fierce fighter who loved his country and served his constituents with dignity. A man of deep integrity, he had the courage to stick with his principles and defend human decency. He always stood up for democracy and human rights in the face of tyranny. He opposed torture at a time when few voices had the courage and integrity to do so. And he won the gratitude of many for his refusal to go along with efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and take health care away from millions of Americans. Sen. McCain battled cancer with the same intensity he channeled throughout his storied career. I wish his family strength and comfort at this difficult time.
