STATEMENT: Rushed Hearing for Supreme Court Nominee Kavanaugh Shows Process Is a Sham, CAP’s Neera Tanden Says

Washington, D.C. — After Senate Republicans announced that hearings for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh would begin September 4, Neera Tanden, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

Kavanaugh should be ashamed to let Senate Republicans rush his hearing before the public can fully review his record. They must be terrified of what that review would turn up, and some documents already show Kavanaugh might have misled the Senate about his role in the Bush White House. This is yet another sign that this process is a complete sham and a blatant power grab against American women in particular. They are ramming through a justice who will shift the balance of the court to overturn Roe v. Wade and the Affordable Care Act and will put the president above the law just as a criminal investigation is closing in. It is an insult to every citizen of this country and a fundamental corruption of our democracy.
