Washington, D.C. — Friday marks the first anniversary of the U.S. House of Representatives’ vote to pass the American Health Care Act, which would have repealed major provisions of the Affordable Care Act, increased the number of uninsured, and stripped protections for people with pre-existing conditions. Topher Spiro, vice president of Health Policy at the Center for American Progress, released the following statement on the event:
It has been one year since the House of Representatives voted to take health care away from 23 million Americans and gut protections for people with pre-existing conditions. This effort ultimately died because people across the country sent a very clear message to Washington: Health care is a basic human right. Since then, rather than listen to their constituents, President Donald Trump and Congress have continued to push a reckless agenda that will increase premiums for consumers by double digits next year—all just to give massive tax breaks to wealthy donors. The American people will continue this fight because the threat of repeal remains, and we must hold our elected officials accountable for their vote.
