Washington, D.C. — After President Donald Trump late Friday issued an order barring many transgender troops from serving in the military, Laura E. Durso, vice president of the LGBT Research and Communications Project at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:
The Trump administration is causing further confusion and immense hurt with its policy to ban the military service of transgender Americans. Doing so is an affront to the sacrifice that thousands of transgender troops and their families make every day for our country. The administration would have transgender people deny their own humanity in order to heed the call to serve—something we ask of no other class of people—hindering our national security and singling out an entire community for discrimination.
